TIPS FOR STORING YOUR FURNITURE

Furniture is one of the most commonly stored items, but few people know how to do it right and end up with damage to the items. Having a collection of furniture is great, but sometimes you simply need more storage space. If you have recently decided to handle your storage needs with a self-storage solution, here are some of the leading tips for keeping your furniture safe during a period of disuse.

HOW-TO BEST STORE YOUR FURNITURE IN HILL CITY, SD

Confirm The Unit Is Secure

Too many times have consumers been put at risk for loss by self-storage facilities that simply aren’t secure. Before you decide on any unit, be sure there are several layers of conventional security in place. There should be a physical lock able to be installed on the entry door to your unit, and your unit should have an alarm that functions as expected. The entry and general premises should also feature 24-hour, color video recording, and the walls between each unit should be floor-to-ceiling.

Use Pallets to Protect & Insulate

One of the cheapest ways to make sure your stored furniture stays safe from many environmental damages is to elevate it off of the ground. Some people might use cinder blocks but putting down a few palettes is an easy way to keep your furniture off the ground, where it can stay warm and dry. Palettes will not only be a simple and affordable platform for your stored goods, but they can also provide an insect barrier if they’ve been appropriately treated.

Clean Items Before Storage

One of the biggest mistakes people make is to store items dirty, thinking “i’ll have time to clean it later.” You won’t. Clean your items before you store them.

Wooden Furniture

Wood items can be dusted before cleaning. Use a duster or cloth to dust, with a mild wood soap solution to clean. When clean and dry, use a wood polish to seal and protect the wood in your absence.

Upholstery

All removable upholstery like cushions and pillows should be vacuumed before being cleaned. When the vacuuming is done, a steam cleaner will help to extract any leftover grime. You will want to use a steam cleaner, and be sure everything is completely dry before actually storing. Leather Leather furniture is becoming less common, but well taken care of examples will be floating from generation to generation for years to come. Be sure to clean the leather with a solution made from equal parts vinegar and water to clean. It can just be sprayed on and left to dry, applying a conditioner to the leather once dry. Being sure everything is completely dry before storage is again, crucial.

Disassemble When Possible

If furniture can be disassembled before storage, that should be done. Taking apart tables and chairs before long-term storage is vital in some cases, and can allow the owner to more effectively wrap or cover them in storage. Taking apart furniture also makes it easier to transport and store, ultimately making it easier to protect.

Cover & Protect

Covering and protecting the items being stored is something that few people consider once they have a small storage facility. However, you’ll still need to protect your items from dust and general debris. You can use shrink wrap or bubble wrap on your wood, but don’t use either on leather, or they’ll trap moisture. Upholstered or leather furniture can use sheets, blankets, or specialty furniture covers. The staff at your self-storage facility should have a range of covers available.

Don’t Crowd & Cram

Once you have everything ready to get stored, remember that you’ll still need to make sure that air can get between each piece to allow for ventilation. Even with large collections, you’ll want to make sure that they are stored in the unit in such a way that no air or moisture will be trapped by their placement.Another reason that you’ll want to make sure you leave enough room around each item, is your own comfort. If you need to come to inspect the furniture at some point or receive one piece that is more deeply stored than others, having enough room to walk around each piece can save a lot of time and effort unpacking, then repacking the storage unit.

Organize Well

So many people use their storage unit as a “catch-all” and simply don’t know what they have stored here. Be sure that you maintain an easy storage scheme or outline so that you know what you have in storage but so that you also know where each item is stored in the unit. The longer you plan on having furniture in storage the more likely it is that your organization information will be needed down the road. You should plan to have anything in long-term storage placed along the perimeter of the unit, leaving the main center area open for short-term storage and item wiggle room.
